The Department of Electrical Engineering has several labs, that combine basic and advanced materials and equipments, according to their lines of research: Power Electronics (Laboratório Eletrônica de Potência - ELEPOT), Teleinformatics and Automation (Grupo de Teleinformática e Automação - GTA), Corona and Partial Discharges (Laboratório de Corona e Descargas Parciais - CORONA), Power Systems (Laboratório de Sistemas de Potência - LASPOT), Control Systems (Laboratório de Controle - LABCON), Signal Processing (Laboratório de Processamento de Sinais - LPS), Instrumentation and Photonics (Laboratório de Instrumentação e Fotônica), Analogic and Digital Signal Processing (Processamento Analógico e Digital de Sinais - PADS), Integrated Circuits Project (Laboratório de Projeto de Circuitos), High-Performance Computing (Núcleo Avançado de Computação de Alto Desempenho - NACAD), Superconductors Applications (Laboratório de Aplicações de Supercondutores - LASUP), Power Electronics and Medium Voltage (Laboratório de Eletrônica de Potência e Média Tensão - LEMT), Control and Automation, Engineering of Application and Development (Laboratório de Controle e Automação, Engenharia de Aplicação e Desenvolvimento LEAD), Control and Automation (Laboratório de Controle e Automação - LCA), Signals, Multimidia and Telecommunications (Sinais, Multimídia e Telecomunicações - SMT). Every lab in the Department is equipped with computing resources and infrastructure of wired and wireless Internet access, together with research-specific computing clusters.
The Department shares with Escola Politécnica da UFRJ labs for High Voltage, Electric Machines, Special Machines, Power Systems, Control and Automation, and Alternative Energy Sources. The infrastructure maintenance of the labs benefits from Research and Development (R&D) projects with industries, achieved through Fundação COPPETEC and José Bonifácio or with agencies like CAPES, CNPq, and FAPERJ.
Common areas of the Department (office, auditorium, study rooms, classrooms and others) are integrated with a certified network (PEE network). The auditorium has an intelligent videoconference system Polycom VSX 7000, with cameras, stereo surround audio, environmental microphone, multimedia transmission and connection management system with support to video standards H.264, H.323, SIP and AES (data encryption). There is also a Hitachi CP-RX80 projector, positioned in a way so the lecturer can see the audience as an extension of a screen in the back of the room. This system enables students and staff to watch and take part in videoconferences, with remote participation of other people. The auditorium also has a MIMIO Interactive Whiteboard system DMA-02. It is an interactive system designed to transmit lectures content, making classes or lectures transmission more interesting and dynamic.
Other than multimedia auditorium, the Department also has four classrooms exclusive to its students. The four classrooms are acclimatized and equipped with whiteboard, projector, computers connected to the Internet, network access points and wireless infrastructure. There is also an acclimatized study room, with capacity for 50 students, equipped with wireless Internet infrastructure.
The researchers of the Department can also count on the Mechanics Workshop which can execute mechanical services to the development of projects and thesis.
